Spelling is the knowledge and use of English orthography, the system for representing English language in written form. Spelling is a functional component of writing and automaticity is the basis of fluent writing.
Spelling is also a component of reading, including proofreading, owing to is role in vocabulary acquisition and decoding skills. It is closely related to vocabulary development.
P–2 year levels have additional content descriptions for spelling within the Language strand under Sound and letter knowledge (phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge).
