The teaching and learning of English spelling is a core learning priority in schools. Improved student achievement and outcomes in spelling secures success across all the learning areas and beyond. Interest in the language and independent mastery of written standard Australian English are the goals.

Spelling is the knowledge and use of English orthography, the system for representing English language in written form. Spelling is a functional component of writing and automaticity is the basis of fluent writing.

Spelling is also a component of reading, including proofreading, owing to is role in vocabulary acquisition and decoding skills. It is closely related to vocabulary development.

C2C spelling materials align to the Australian Curriculum: English P–10 Language strand content descriptions under Expressing and developing ideas (vocabulary and spelling).

P–2 year levels have additional content descriptions for spelling within the Language strand under Sound and letter knowledge (phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge).
